Using a design by Horace Day of four rubber cloth tubes wrapped around a wooden floor, John Fremont—a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army—navigated the Platte River in 1842 by river rafting, while using this same means in exploring the western U.S. along the Oregon Trail, into Sierra Nevada and beyond to Lake Tahoe and Mount St. Helens.
It wasn’t until the early 1960s, however, that white-water rafting became a recreational pastime!
